The calendar has ticked over again and with it comes something of a fresh start, a new beginning. The transition to 2014 brings with it opportunities and challenges alike and community and businesses leaders all have their own wish lists.
There is little doubt Armidale and district could do with some good fortune in 2014 and like it or not the economy will have a major bearing on the success or otherwise of the next 12 months. Many leaders and business people have mentioned the need for growth and development. New businesses, investment growth, more jobs, greater consumer confidence - it all contributes to a stronger outlook for the region and its residents.
But, of course, it’s not all about money. Or at least it’s not all about putting money in the pockets of businesses or even consumers.
The community wants its services maintained as well. That’s where the leaders need act.
In Armidale the need for a new waste management centre is at the forefront. This has been an ongoing matter and has caused a lot of friction among councillors. But surely 2014 is the year it will all be sorted out, one way or the other.
The hospital, too, is a major issue. Any survey of residents about what issues or services are of most importance to them will deliver the same answer and health will be near the top of the list. The hospital needs federal funding to get the upgrade it needs. We have a new federal government and its first full 12 months in office it can deliver what Northern Tablelands people have been asking for.
Liberal state senator Scot MacDonald said the full deck of Coalition governments is a positive for the region, but they have to live up to their promises for that to be the case. That means things like the airport upgrade must be realised.
Whatever your goals or hopes for 2014, the means of realising them remains the same. It’s up to the whole community to make it work.
