giving Armidale residents an insight into the world of children’s literature during a two-week residency in the city.
Ms McFadden is the first writer in residency in the Creative Communities in Children’s and Young Adult Literature program being run by the University of New England’s School of Arts and the Arts New England Centre for Research and Innovation in the Arts.
During her stay in Armidale, the Brisbane-based author of children’s book The Flying Orchestra has been running a series of workshops as well as working on her second picture book.
Workshops included drawing motion workshops for school students at the New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM), professional development workshops for teachers and workshops on finding a way into the publishing industry for tertiary students.
On Saturday morning, Ms McFadden attended the Children’s Book Council monthly meeting before holding a public reading of her book at the Armidale Dumaresq Library.
The residency marked Ms McFadden’s first trip to Armidale and she said she was enjoying it.
“It’s very nice to get away and I do
really enjoy doing residencies,” she said.
“It really is a beautiful town.”
Ms McFadden is also set to open a NERAM exhibition, ‘Come By Chance’, featuring watercolour drawings from the children’s book Come By Chance by Madeleine Winch this Friday night from 6pm.
The will also be signing copies of The Flying Orchestra on the night.
