"I left me running too late, I only gave myself three weeks and clearly that was not enough time for a campaign," Dr Maher said tonight at Happy Thai, where he was joined by a group of about 12 volunteers after an arduous day at the polling booths.
He said a lack of resources also counted against him.
"This campaign cost me $7000 and I would bet the Nationals put in far, far more than that," Dr Maher said.
"Someone asked me where my office was and there was nowhere to point, I just didn't have one."
Counting from all booths across Armidale has been completed and Mr Marshall is polling 60 per cent of votes counted, according to election analyst Antony Green.
Dr Maher was trailing Mr Marshall by nearly half the number of votes, with Labor in third place, although its candidate Herman Beyersdorf managed to raise the Party's vote by 6.6 per cent, indicating he would get his deposit back, unlike in 2011.
Politicians and political pundits are taking to Twitter to tip Mr Marshall's victory and provide analysis.
NSW MLC Melinda Pavey noted Labor didn't even have a presence at the polling booth at Ebor, despite Greens volunteers working there.
