Since 2011, Bridge 2 Bridge has raised money for the Cure for Life Foundation, founded by Dr Charlie Teo. The foundation raises money for research and treatment of brain cancer.
Each year cyclists ride from Brisbane’s Story Bridge to the Sydney Harbour Bridge - a gruelling 1000 kilometre trek. Mr Bishop said this year was the first time someone personally affected by the disease has participated in the ride.
Four of the riders, including Mr Bishop himself, have lost loved ones to cancer. In Mr Bishop’s case, he lost his daughter to an aggressive tumour in 2009.
He said he was concerned by the lack of research into brain cancer.
“While brain cancer continues to cause more deaths in children and adults under 40, it is concerning that there have been no significant recorded improvements in survival rates in almost 20 years,” he said.
Mr Bishop said the ride had enjoyed support from communities, councils and businesses and “the Armidale area is no exception”.
