For young indigenous woman, Leetona Pitt, Beyond Empathy initiative National No Shame day hits close to home.
Ms Pitt, 22, said she always felt looked down upon because of her background, with shame causing her to hide her singing talent until earlier this year.
“Then it hit me one day, you have this voice- nobody has a voice like mine,” she said. “It’s going to be the day that this whole weight’s going to be lifted off of anybody in this town- black, white, Chinese, African- if they’ve got a talent they’re going to let it shine.”
Since performing in Silver City Songlines earlier this year, Ms Pitt has been offered a scholarship for singing lessons at the New England Conservatorium of Music and said letting her talents show was helping to inspire younger indigenous people.
