Attracting some 1,820 archers - and just about everything else - it was on a scale not seen by Dennis in his 35 or more years of archery.
Three separate indoor venues each housed 150 targets and 450 archers per session. The event was shot over three days for qualification and elimination rounds, for both individual and teams events.
Young Australian archer Ryan Tyack, who has just stepped out of the junior ranks, came a very credible third in the men’s recurve division.
While Dennis didn’t figure in the rankings he thoroughly enjoyed the experience and was in awe of the size of the Hotel complex. “Everything was on such a huge scale,” he said. The hotel Dennis stayed in had 2,160 rooms It also boasted a 64 lane ten pin bowling alley, a 16 screen cinema complex and a 4,600 seat indoor equestrian centre. Following the championships, Dennis reverted to his role as Australian team coach to support the Australian men and women as they competed in the indoor archery world cup. Again competition was very stiff and the Aussies didn’t rank in the placings but overall the tournaments were rewarding and a great experience for all archers attending.
Wednesday night’s twilight shoot again saw a great roll up of members. Sunday morning offered almost perfect shooting conditions which were appreciated by all.
On the line Dennis Carson 673, David Howe 651 and Madden Rayner 634 shot 72 arrows over 70m. Hollie Giles also shot 72 arrows over 45/35m and returned 607. Margaret Carson, Dan Alter, Rob James, and new faces Tim and Liam were also on the shooting line.
