Running in the 200 metre heats in the open athletics event, Stone secured a personal best of 21.84 last Sunday despite ongoing injury and preparation concerns ahead of the three day competition.
His time set a new Australian masters record which bettered the previous times of Mark Rosenberg’s 22.13 from 1994 and Robert Medlicott’s 2000 effort of 21.86.
Stone, the oldest athlete in the heat at 32, said gaining a personal best time and breaking the record with his hamstring and achilles’ injuries was very pleasing.
“To come out with a personal best time at my age with a disrupted preparation was a real surprise, but I'm still very happy,” he said.
Stone competed against athletes who were attempting to gain qualification for the London Olympics.
He competed in the 400 metres last Friday night, the 800 metres on Saturday evening and the 200 metres on Sunday.
In order to qualify for the Homebush meet, athletes had to have competed at the NSW country championships or at previous races in Sydney.
Stone was unable to match his heat time in the final, where he finished seventh.
Stone said the meet was a good preparation for the masters event which starts in Melbourne tomorrow.
His focus in Melbourne will be the 200 metres.
“I want to gain a few medals in Melbourne where I’ll be concentrating on the 400 metres event,” he said.
“I’m just hoping to be as consistent as I can be with the injuries I’ve had.”
The masters championships conclude on Monday.
