Award organisers said training the next generation of GPs takes a team and that the Rusden Street Medical Practice has been training and supporting GP registrars as they undertake their training to become specialist GPs, for many years.

"Giving back and helping our registrars is very rewarding for not only their GP supervisors but the whole practice team," Ms Morgan said.

"It is important that the registrars are exposed to all aspects of rural GP training and are able to contribute to the community's long-term wellbeing.

"The most rewarding is after our registrars have completed their training and some have chosen to stay and join our practice team.

"I'm surprised, humbled and very honoured to have won the award."

She said she was proud that the training and processes put in place by her, the supervisors and the team had been recognised for giving a foundation to training registrars.

Mrs Georgina van de Water, CEO of local general practice education and training provider GP Synergy, said the training of GP registrars relies heavily on accredited general practices.

"GP Synergy is delighted to be able to present the annual Practice Manager of the Year award for the New England/Northwest to Ms Morgan in recognition of her commitment to excellence in general practice education and training," Mrs van de Water said.

"GP registrars make a significant contribution to primary health care provision in local communities, undertaking nearly 45,000 consultations across the New England/Northwest region in the first half of this year alone.

"There are nearly 60 general practices in the New England/Northwest training region accredited for GP training.

"Practice managers are integral to practices maintaining their training accreditation and in supporting the training of GP registrars

"It's practice managers that help registrars navigate the behind-the-scenes workings of general practice and support their placement and training within the practice, often helping them settle into a new community."
