A map of data compiled by the National Diabetes Services Scheme indicates that Armidale and neighbouring Uralla and Glen Innes Severn are listed as lower-risk areas with about 4.4 per cent and 5.8 per cent of residents respectively living with type 2 diabetes.

Moree Plains, Glen Innes Severn, Tenterfield and Inverell are all listed as standard with reported rates of diabetes falling in line with the national rate of around 6 per cent.

While it's an uplifting sign that the region is largely in good health, Diabetes Australia warn no one should be complacent, with as many as 500,000 cases undiagnosed nationwide.

Type 2 diabetes accounts for almost 90 per cent of all diabetes cases and can be managed through medication and also partly mitigated through diet and exercise.

Diabetes Australia said more than 300 people per day are diagnosed with diabetes, meaning a new diagnosis every five minutes.

More alarmingly, one in four adult Australians is living with diabetes or with elevated levels not yet sufficient for a diagnosis known as pre-diabetes.

Of the Local government areas in New England, Tenterfield accounts for 520 diabetes sufferers, making up almost 7 per cent of the shire's population to have the highest rate across the region.

Meanwhile, the Armidale Regional Council area has a little over 1500 cases, but has five times more people within in the government area, dropping the rate to just 4.4 per cent.

Inverell's rate is over 6 per cent with more than 1200 cases, while Moree Plains had 950 cases of its 15,600 residents to hover just over 6 per cent as well.

Uralla and Glen Innes both sit just below the average with 5.8 per cent of residents living with type 2 diabetes accounting for 410 and 610 cases respectively.
