I envisage a resilient regional community shaped by grassroots decision-making which balances ecological sustainability with economic development and social justice; a region in which the unique attributes of our village communities and the unparalleled opportunities offered by our National Parks and upland lagoons are valued and protected.
2 What do you think is the single most important issue facing the Armidale area?
The single most important issue is dealing with the climate emergency. We need to continue to work to secure our community's well-being and environment by building on ARC's Climate Emergency Declaration; water-security, health (mental and physical), protection of biodiversity and energy efficient buildings.
3 What projects/developments do you intend to advocate for if elected as a councillor?
I intend to advocate for climate action and sustainable development facilitated by community benefits expected from the Renewable Energy Zone; for Council advisory committees for Guyra and Youth; for transparency and accountability in decision-making and for the implementation of plans already created by ARC following extensive community consultation. Also renewal of the Armidale CBD and fostering a vibrant student campus at UNE with strong partnerships between the university and Council.
4 What expertise or attributes do you have which would help you in undertaking the role of Councillor?
Teaching taught me much about problem-solving, communication of challenging ideas, research and the complexities of our community. Environmental activism following retirement has provided experience with and understanding of Council processes and of the complexities of regulations and restrictions imposed by the NSW Government. I have participated in 'Have Your Say', most recently regarding protection of Guyra bores, have written submissions to many of Council's deliberations and represented the concerns of other residents regarding, for example, illegal clearing, derelict mine pollution and unacceptable proposed developments.
