So we've taken a look at the figures from the Victorian second outbreak of 2020, compared to how NSW's Delta variant outbreak is tracking.
Victoria's outbreak began earlier in June 2020 than NSW's did comparatively to June 2021. Victoria's was due to hotel quarantine breaches with far less contact tracing. The current outbreak in NSW is the Delta variant which began following a positive test result for a limo driver on June 15.
While the graph stops at June 29, in Victoria in 2020 cases peaked on August 4 with 687 and didn't get back under 100 until August 28 (90 cases). It then took until October 31 for Victoria to reach its first 'doughnut day' in the second wave.
How long will it take for NSW to do the same?
It has been now been 45 days since the first case triggering this NSW outbreak was reported, and there are 2512 active cases.
After 45 days following the hotel quarantine leak in Victoria at the end of May, 1473 cases.
Active cases peaked in Victoria at 6766.
- Please note this comparison focuses on case tallies and there is more comprehensive epidemiological data comparing the outbreaks.
