Wakeling, who became the second Indigenous Australian to lift at an Olympics, successfully attempted 125kg in snatch and 166kg in clean and jerk.
A combined 291kg bettered the 27-year-old's effort at the 2018 and 2019 world championships.
But it wasn't enough for Wakeling, whose early sporting dreams were of long jump before he shifted to focus to rugby league then weightlifting, to rise up the rankings and into medal contention at the Tokyo International Forum.
Charisma Amoe-Tarrant, who will compete alongside transgender Olympian Laurel Hubbard in the +87kg category on Monday, is the next Australian lifter in action at these Games.
