About 7am, emergency services responded to reports a Hyundai Hatch had hit a tree after leaving the New England Highway, Bendemeer, about 70km south of Armidale.
The 17-year-old driver - and only occupant - was assisted at the scene by passing motorists, before NSW Ambulance paramedics and officers attached to Oxley Police District arrived.
She was stabilised and airlifted to John Hunter Hospital, where she died.
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.

A teenager is in a critical condition after an accident on the New England Highway on Thursday morning and has been flown to a Newcastle hospital.
The 17-year-old girl was trapped in the wreckage of the crash near Bendemeer for sometime and had to be rescued. She was the only occupant in the car at the time of the crash.
She was treated on scene by two critical care doctors and paramedics for serious injuries.

She was then airlifted by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle in a critical condition.
Ambulance NSW Inspector James Wood confirmed the woman suffered serious head injuries.
"When we arrived on scene it was clear the vehicle had extensive damage and the woman was trapped inside," he said.
"Paramedics along with the specialist medical team worked closely to treat and carefully release the trapped woman from the car before she was airlifted to hospital."
"We really encourage anyone near or around our roads to take every precaution possible to ensure your safety."
Critical care doctors and paramedics rushed to help the teenager who had suffered the injury in a rollover on the New England Highway, north of Bendemeer.
Four ambulances as well as the Westpac Rescue Helicopter were deployed to the scene.
The first emergency call was made about 7am for the crash.
Emergency services including police and the RFS attended the scene and motorists were urged to avoid the area or allow extra travel time and follow Live Traffic NSW for updates.
