The NSW Bushfire Response R&D Mission will be funded in next week's state budget to explore new options, including the potential to use satellite imagery to map fire fronts.

The funding will develop technology from local companies and "attract interest" from global markets, NSW Chief Scientist Hugh Durrant-Whyte says.

"The mission will develop the use of real-time data from space, air and ground-based assets, ensure fire ground decisions made are based on information and computer-aided tools, and enable the use of equipment including robots to aid responders," he said in a statement on Thursday.

The program was established after a bushfire technology fund was recommended by the the NSW Bushfire Inquiry after the Black Summer fires of 2019-20, which claimed 25 lives and destroyed around 2500 homes.

NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said the state would take its "hard won know-how" as a bushfire hotspot to the world.

"The 2019-20 bushfires claimed lives, destroyed thousands of homes and cost NSW billions," Mr Perrottet said.

"This investment will go towards reducing the impact of bushfires and responding in the most effective way possible."

Potential investments include the development of sovereign semiconductor production capabilities and a focus on synthetic biology.

The NSW budget will be handed down on Tuesday.
