Snowy conditions forced the New England Highway to be slammed shut to all traffic between Glen Innes and Glencoe early on Thursday morning due to low visibility and slippery surfaces with ice.

Diversions were in place for some time, before the New England Highway was reopened later on Thursday morning.

Heavy snow was reportedly dumped overnight in locations like Niangala, Nowendoc, Hanging Rock near Nundle and Guyra.

But across the upper Northern Tablelands it has been more of a tease than a winter wonderland so far.

Reports of up to half-a-metre of snow in the Hanging Rock area has forced roads out of Nundle to be closed to would-be tourists and snow-goers.

Routes have been closed to the general public due to icy conditions on Thursday morning, according to Live Traffic NSW updates.

Ogunbil Road has been shut in both directions, including Port Stephens Cutting. There is also no access from Nowendoc Road or Weabonga Road.

Duncans Creak Road near Hanging Rock has been closed due to wet, snowy and slippery conditions.

Barry Road, which also goes to Hanging Rock, has been shut to all traffic at the Nundle intersection.

Shearers Road and Morrisons Gap Road are also closed south of Hanging Rock.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast more snow to fall later today in locations such as Guyra and Walcha, where the roads remained open on Thursday.

Anyone tempted to go and see the snow should be very cautious - especially on slippery roads - and obey all road closed signs.

People have also been reminded not to trespass on private property to see snow, with reports drifting in of locals calling the police on those who ignore road closed signs or go where they shouldn't.
