In the lead-up to mother's day, I spoke to a young mum in Armidale who reflected on how privileged she is to be a mother and to have three powerful and supportive women in her life.
When Jess Stocker was 17-years-old, she survived a serious car accident in Uralla - but only just.
Her heart stopped five times; she had nine broken bones, a punctured lung, and a severe traumatic brain injury.
It was more than a decade ago, and she is still recovering, but she is now the proud and adoring mum of a two-year-old boy who lights up her life.
"Sometimes, I think I should be better than I am. But then I tell myself, that's who I am, and that's okay," she told me.
"It took me a long time to get here, but I'm happy in my life."
Speaking with Jess made me realise just how lucky most of us are - and how much we have to be thankful for - although we may not always realise it.
I also spoke with another young mum who had recently lost her mother after a long battle with cancer. Bev Betts was well known across the region as a caring member of the community and a stalwart of the local transport industry.
Her life was filled with family, faith, and purpose. Throughout her life, Bev was thankful, and she said her two children were a blessing and the thing she was most proud of.
Last month, she was farewelled and celebrated at a memorial service attended by more than 1000 people in St Peter's Anglican Cathedral in Armidale.
May 5 was International Day of the Midwife, and doctors paid tribute to the essential service these front-line workers do.
Dr John Hall, president of the Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA), said that birthing units play an essential role in keeping many rural hospital services going, and midwives provide the key to achieving this.
So I hope you took the opportunity to reflect on the unique role your mum plays in your life last Sunday, and wherever possible, that you let her know how you feel.
Have a good week, and thanks for reading.
