Police facts read out to the court detailed Ellis had been accused of "slashing" a 32-year-old man's stomach open with a knife, so much so his intestines protruded.
Ellis' legal representative, solicitor Mandy Mackenzie, applied for a release application on his behalf.
Crystal Jones, appearing for the prosecution, argued strongly against his release.
His criminal history, "while limited" had other matters of domestic violence involving other victims, for which he had already received and served supervised community corrections orders, she said.
Ms Jones said he was very likely facing a lengthy stint in jail.
"[The prosecution case] appears to be strong, with semi-admissions made to police recorded on video," she explained.
If freed, she said there was a strong chance he would fail to appear in order to avoid prison.
Ms Mackenzie argued that bail conditions could be set to assure the court of his co-operation.
With the alleged victim living in Tingha and he in Inverell, there could be a non-contact order made, with the AVO in place, she said.
Ellis' flight risk was low, she explained, because he had no breaches of bail or any failure to appears on his record.
"He also has strong ties, having lived in Inverell his whole life, and his entire family lives here," she said.
While there was one case of domestic violence on his record, previous offences pertained mainly to property rather than physical harm, Ms Mackenzie posited.
Magistrate Holly Kemp said the facts presented as "an alarming case of domestic violence".
"There is indeed a strong prosecution case, which he asserted with admissions telling police he was 'sorry for his actions'," she stated.
"[The facts say] he was armed with a knife ... and slashed the victim in the stomach causing his intestines to protrude."
Given the seriousness of the facts, his prior domestic violence convictions, and the risk he posed to the community, he was refused bail.
He will come before Inverell Local Court again on July 1.
