"A male victim was found with a significant stab wound to the abdomen," New England Inspector James Parsons told the Express.
"He was in a critical condition and flown to Tamworth hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.
"He is now listed in a stable condition."
Police arrested the 26-year-old at the scene and he was taken to Inverell Police Station for questioning.
He was subsequently charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm - a charge that carries a maximum penalty of 25 years' imprisonment, if found guilty.
He was refused bail by police to appear in Inverell Local Court on Thursday.
Police said the home had been declared a crime scene and had been combed by forensic officers.
The pair are known to one another and the incident is being treated as domestic violence-related, officers said.
Investigations are continuing.
