The son of an elderly man who was attacked in his Armidale home has described youth crime in the city as out of control.

The son, who grew up in Armidale and did not want to be named, said his 82-year-old father had recently gone through health battles, including having open heart surgery twice.
Now he is dealing with the ordeal of facing four intruders in his own home, who stole his car and phone.

At about 12.45am on Friday, officers attached to New England Police District received reports four people had forced entry to a home on Niagara Street, Armidale.
Police were told that the group woke the occupant and demanded personal items including his wallet and keys.
The group then fled the scene in the man's vehicle, which was later recovered in O'Dell Street, Armidale.
He was not physically injured during the incident, but his son said it had left him terribly shaken.
Officers attended, established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
As inquiries continue, police urge anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage from the area around the time of the incident to contact Armidale Police Station on 6771 0699.
