A MAN that was seriously injured in a work accident at a local tip on Tuesday afternoon has been airlifted to Tamworth hospital.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Uralla at the town's landfill on Tip Road just before 3pm.
Ambulance NSW confirmed an employee at the site, believed to be a man in his 40s, had suffered a head injury while using heavy machinery.

The worker was knocked unconscious when the machinery cabin of the excavator he was in was hit by an unknown object. The cabin's windscreen was smashed in the incident.
Paramedics treated the man for serious head injuries at the scene.
Six ambulance crews were deployed to the tip, as well as the Westpac Rescue Helicopter from Tamworth.
The man was assessed by the chopper's critical care medical team when they arrived on scene before he was airlifted to Tamworth hospital. He was believed to be in a stable condition.
