A TAMWORTH man has been denied bail but will fight charges he stabbed and tortured a dog, and ultimately caused its death.

Jleal Blacklock appeared in Tamworth Local Court again on Monday, after his arrest in Tamworth on Friday night.
The 25-year-old's accused of stabbing the mixed breed dog in a backyard of a Cossa Street home in Coledale, before police were alerted just after 5pm that day.
A 36-year-old woman, who police said was known to the accused, took the injured dog to a nearby animal hospital, but it later died.

Blacklock was arrested just after 5.30pm by police patrolling Robert Street. He's been in custody since.
On Monday, he pleaded not guilty to charges in court of torturing, beating and causing prolonged suffering to an animal; torturing and causing an animal's death; as well as contravening an AVO.
Magistrate Julie Soars set the charges down for a hearing in March, with a brief into the case ordered.
She also refused an application for bail, ordering him to remain in custody until his hearing in March.
