The colt has had just six races in those 12 months of racing but Tamworth trainer Mel O'Gorman thought a win would have come before Monday when the three-year-old won the XXXX Gold Maiden Handicap (1100m).
"He only had five starts before today but ran two very good seconds and the form around him was good with a lot of winners coming out of those maidens," O'Gorman said.
Three horses from each of those maidens where Tools Down ran second - one at Grafton and one at Tamworth - have since won races.
And from Tools Down's first race start on January 30 in 2020, seven horses have gone on to win races.
The chestnut colt joined that list with his win on Monday.
Under the guidance of Casey Waddell, who O'Gorman said did a "great job", led from start to finish to beat home the Zach Hatch-trained Global Challenge by close to three lengths.
From here, O'Gorman believes Tools Down can move onto some better races.
"That would do a lot for his confidence today," O'Gorman said.
"He had those two seconds last preparation and the form around him is very good so I do think this time in he's more mature and a lot more confident.
She added: "Hopefully this time around he can put a few together and the owners can have some fun with him."
The "lovely" ownership group are from all over Australia which includes long time supporters Ken and Christine Thomas and their daughter Alex.
The list of owners also includes a group from Victoria who used to race Tools Down's mother, It's Poets Day, as well as a syndicate from Dorrigo Hotel.
"[It's] the same syndicate that took Suncraze to the The Kosciuszko when we ran second - from that association with Suncraze, they purchased a share in this horse," O'Gorman said.
O'Gorman next has horses nominated for Saturday.
Adelaide Moment, Slaking and Gee Tee Ay have been nominated for Tamworth while Timerox has been nominated for Rosehill.
