Emergency services were called to D'Estrees Bay at about 2.20pm on Sunday after reports of an attack by a great white shark.
After making it to shore the man sought help from a member of the public who drove him toward Kingscote.
Paramedics met the car en route and took the man to hospital, where he was airlifted to Adelaide for treatment.
The man's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
The public is asked to avoid the area.
