There were also 136 new COVID-19 deaths.
Lombardy, which includes Milan, has been the worst affected region in both the first and second wave of the pandemic.
The northern region recorded 4125 new cases.
Piedmont in the northeast with 1550 cases and Campania in the south, with 1541 cases, were the second and third-most affected regions on Thursday.
Overall, more than 465,700 people in Italy have tested positive for the coronavirus.
The total number of known virus-related deaths stands at 36,968.
