New figures released by Liquor and Gaming NSW reveal a 50.70 per cent surge in cash lost to Armidale's hotel pokies in June compared to the same time last year.
This was even higher than the losses experienced in Tamworth's hotels, which saw an increase of 44% for the same period.
Cash lost in Armidale's clubs was much less, with an increase of 8.04% when compared to the same period last year.
Pubs reopened to punters after the state's COVID-19 lockdown in March.
The figures showed Armidale has 193 gaming machines at five clubs, and 162 gaming machines at 14 hotels.
The NSW Office of Responsible Gambling tries to minimise and prevent problem gambling, a spokeswoman said.
"The office, and the gambling help services it funds, will continue reaching out to the community to encourage people to get the support they need, particularly during changed conditions and changing gambling behaviours as a result of COVID-19," she said.
"Gambling Help NSW provides free, confidential support and advice for anyone experiencing problems with gambling, including support for family members and friends."
The outbreak of COVID-19 means venues are responsible for ensuring clientele gamble responsibly, and adhere to restrictions, a Liquor and Gaming NSW spokeswoman said.
"The measures in the Public Health Orders and COVID-19 safety plans are designed to keep patrons safe in all parts of a venue, including gaming rooms," she said.

"One specific measure that relates to gaming machines is the requirement to keep gaming machines 1.5m apart, either through physical spacing or switching off every second machine.
"While there is an increased focus on compliance with the Public Health Orders and COVID-19 Safety Plans, venues must also be aware of and complying with their obligations relating to the responsible conduct of gaming and gaming harm minimisation more broadly."
