ST MARY'S Catholic Primary School at Armidale will soon have a crossing supervisor holding back traffic and keeping students safe on the busy Rusden Street.

Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall announced the news on Thursday, with the new position to greatly improve the safety at the sometimes precarious crossing, monitoring students at the pedestrian crossing outside the school's main entrance as they arrive and depart each day.

"St Mary's Primary School is surrounded by some of Armidale's busiest streets - Rusden, Barney and Jesse - so this new position is a very important move to improve student safety," Mr Marshall said.

"Every day can be a logistical struggle for parents to get their children to school safely which is why St Mary's has been working for some time to try and secure one of these crossing supervisors.

"I was pleased to support the efforts of the school and am delighted with this result, which will see a permanent supervisor employed to keep everyone safe each day.

"Not only will this improve pedestrian safety, but the new crossing supervisor role will provide an employment opportunity for someone who is retired or is happy to work part-time.

"All school crossing supervisors are trained before undertaking duty on a crossing and undergo re-training on a regular basis.

"I strongly encouraged dedicated people interested in serving their community to keep an eye out for the job ad."

The school zones are in effect from 8 to 9:30am and 2.30 to 4pm. Motorists need to remember to watch their speed and slow down when entering an active school zone, or when you see bus lights flash. This means children are nearby.

Those who don't obey the rules are putting lives at risk and face heavy fines and loss of demerit points.
