A major increase in animals being abandoned in Armidale has been offset by a rise in the the number of people adopting pets.

The council-run Armidale Animal Companion Shelter is experiencing some of its busiest days, as rangers respond to an influx of animal surrenders and adoptions.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the shelter has rehomed more than 50 dogs and cats.

"We're receiving many calls through our customer service centre and animal lovers are coming from far and wide to adopt a furry friend," the council's Rangers Team Leader, Ian Chetcuti, said.
"Last week, the shelter re-housed six cats and one dog in a single day. It's great to see so many people stepping up to the challenge and take responsibility of looking after these animals."
Since the start of measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the shelter has rehomed 32 dogs and 21 cats.
