Tenders for lighting between Markham Street and the Donnelly Street bridge are expected to be called this week with construction if the initial section of lighting to begin mid-2020.
According to the council, the location was decided upon based on advice from police, the amount of traffic on that particular section and records of previous incidents.
It will be funded using part of the $450,000 the council received through Round 3 of the Safer communities Fund.
"Assistance from the Federal Government's Safer Communities Fund is enabling us to install an initial section on the cycleway and police assistance has been valuable in identifying where it can be most effective to improve community safety," Armidale Regional Council Mayor Simon Murray said.
"It is hoped the detailed design process and quotes from contractors might identify opportunities to install further lighting and extend this section.
"Council will continue to advocate for additional funding so further lighting can be added to other critical links within the cycleway to improve safety."
The council received $450,000 in funding through Round 3 of the Safer Communities Fund, for a two-part project that included the upgrade five CCTV analogue cameras in Armidale's Beardy Street Mall with digital cameras, including a network upgrade to include optic fibre infrastructure and the installation and commission of 25 solar lights on the cycleway within the Armidale CBD precinct.
The CCTV optic fibre infrastructure upgrade was completed last month. Installation of the digital cameras is scheduled to be undertaken in May and is expected to cost $45,000.
