But the drought hasn't gone away, people still need help - and more than 510 farmers have registered for the hay run coming to Armidale on Australia Day.

Burrumbuttock Hay Runners founder Brendan Farrell OAM spoke to Australian Community Media while on the road to Armidale.

His plan was to talk to council representatives, form a local committee and check out locations for the delivery, among other jobs.

"Over 150 trucks have come on board so far, so we've gotta make sure we scope out our rest stops designated down the highway, that sort of thing," he said.

Mr Farrell said he'd been getting two or three trucks a day signing on for the hay run, and he hoped to reach 200.

"We're a little bit behind our target, but that's because of the fires ... 512 farmers need hay in Armidale, so we've got to get more trucks - but also more hay to cover that number," he said.

"We took 1500 squares into Corryong for the fires on Friday; we've now got to try to replenish some stock and make sure we've got enough for farmers in Armidale.

"A lot of people forget we're still in drought ... [it's] not just going to go away."

Mr Farrell said the convoy was expected to start rolling into the city about lunchtime on January 25.
