Up to 200 trucks, carrying desperately needed hay from nationwide donations, will hit the city on Australia Day in the next big Burrumbuttock Hay Run.

Founder Brendan "Bumpa" Farrell OAM made the announcement on social media this morning, saying it had been a "hard" decision where to take the next huge convoy.

"The whole of NSW and southern Queensland - look, we're all in a lot of shit, " Mr Farrell said.

"You throw a dart at the map and you still won't be able to help everyone."

Australian Community Media contacted Mr Farrell for further details, but he said in the post he hoped 150 to 200 trucks would travel to Armidale.

"We've cut a few fences here at home and made a bit of a pad, and trucks will come in and get loaded up here and stay at Burrumbuttock the night, and then we head off the next morning," Mr Farrell said.

Based on the last Australia Day run - to Quilpie, Qld - it will mean a substantial boost to local farmers and businesses: reports at the time calculated 180 trucks, more than 6500 bales of hay and 500-plus volunteers.

Mr Farrell also spoke of progress on other Burrumbuttock Hay Runners projects: fundraising to install a new toilet block at the Cunnamulla showground and to fix up the Eulo school playground.

"There's bits and pieces we're trying to do all over the place ... we're just trying to keep the dream alive as much as we possibly can."

Burrumbuttock Hay Runners was born in 2014, when Mr Farrell delivered a truckload of hay to a Bourke farmer after hearing his story of struggling in the drought.

He received a Medal of the Order of Australia in the Queen's birthday honours last year.
