Transport for NSW finished the first of two piers that will bear a 320 cantilever bridge and carry cars safely around what has been a notoriously dangerous bend in the New England Highway.
Traffic passing the $80 million joint state-federal project will switch to the eastern side of the highway in order to allow reconstruction work to begin on the other side, said Transport for NSW Director Northern Region Anna Andrews.
"The upgrade remains on track to be complete by the end of 2020, weather permitting," she said.
"The improvement of this essential link for heavy vehicles will allow local producers to safely and reliably transport their goods to market, while also improving safety and efficiency levels for all road users."
Construction of the first pier has been completed and formwork is in place which will allow construction of the cantilever bridge segments to start, she said.
The project is sourcing water for concrete production from a private bore hole near the construction site and reducing wastage through reuse.
The New England Highway will remain restricted to one lane, with delays of around ten minutes. Transport for NSW was forced to install CCTV cameras earlier this year after a number of vehicles ignored the restriction.
