Australia's hysterical and dystopian postmodernists, who lack all sense of humour and proportion in their daily lives, have gone in mob-handed on one of our treasured cartoonists.
Michael Leunig has long been a cartoonist who teases out our silliness and harmful obsessions. His cartoon about the mother absorbed in her mobile phone while her baby had fallen out of the pram, and was lying behind her, really brought out the worst in modern Australian attitudes.
The obsession with the mobile phone is harmful in so many ways. Not least of these is its dehumanising capabilities. Leunig is right to be concerned.
Leunig is essentially a humane human, using quirky humour to point out the problems.
If we cannot laugh at all our stupidities and correct them, there is no hope for us.
