Aran Kenna in the field, Pat Gilbey with the ball and Kyle Taylor with the bat provided the spark City needed to win.
Gilbey began his opening spell by dismissing Hillgrove's two key opening batsmen, Matt Baillie and Matt Schaefer.
Josh Croft and Brad King settled things for Hillgrove with a partnership of 82.
"Patty Gilbey bowled really well," City captain Karl Triebe said.
"He got 4-fa, and the big wickets of Schaef and Bails, which really set us up to get into the middle order and the tail.
"Crofty batted really well for his 50 and Kingy came out and slapped a few runs but we were able to contain them in the end.
"Some excellent fielding by Aran Kenna, they started getting away from us a bit but he took a brilliant catch to get Josh Croft out and then he got a run out.
"He bowled really well but those fielding efforts sparked everyone on."
Triebe managed three wickets and Simon Butler added two to dismiss Hillgrove for 249.
City's run chase got off to a flyer with Taylor picking up where he left off in round two with another century.
Taylor hit 12 fours and two sixes on his way to 116. He was backed up by fellow opener Ash Clee, who scored 32, and Callum McKercher who contributed with 48.
Andrew Skinner on 20 not out remained at the crease along with Triebe on six not out as they chased down Hillgrove's total for a five-wicket win.
"It took some exceptional batting from Kyle again, scoring 100, and Callum, the new kid on the block, supported him really well with a 48," Triebe said.
"They did most of the work to let us guys at the tail just finish off the last few runs."
City have the bye this Saturday as Hillgrove prepare for Ex-Services.
