More than 600 students were inspired to find the right balance in a suite of challenges that made up the seventh Northern NSW, da Vinci Decathlon, hosted by The Armidale School last week.

Attending from 15 department, independent and Catholic schools, the students, in teams of eight, worked through challenges across 10 disciplines: Mathematics; English; Science; Code Breaking; Engineering Challenge; Ideation; Creative Producer; Art and Poetry; Cartography and General Knowledge. In each, was this year's underlying theme, 'Balance'.
"I really liked the engineering challenge. We had to make scales from straws, paper, string and sticky tape. Initially the straw was too long so we had to experiment to get it the right length. It was very rewarding when we came second in that challenge," said Year 6 TAS student Charlie Ross.
Added Mille Coupland: "It was a great atmosphere. It was challenging but entertaining and good to work in a team. We all really liked the fact that a lot of what we did in challenges like maths, was very different to what we do in the classroom, which made it even more fun."

Year 7 and 8 took part on August 28; Year 5 and 6 on Thursday 29 August, and the Decathlon culminated on Friday 30 August with the Year 9 and 10 competitions.
Schools from Armidale, Inverell, Tamworth, Bellingen, Coffs Harbour, Narrabri and Glen Innes took part in this year's Decathlon, with the ultimate results shared across the region: including Armidale City Public School, Carinya Christian School, Ben Venue Public School, Armidale Secondary College, Bishop Druitt College, PLC,Statewide (for home-schooled children) and Aurora College.
