AN ELDERLY man has died in hospital after being hit by a car earlier today in Armidale.
The 76-year-old man was using a pedestrian crossing on Markham St, Armidale on Friday, shortly after midday.
Police allege he was struck by a car, being driven by a 46-year-old woman.
The man suffered critical head injuries and was rushed to Armidale hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
The woman was breath tested at the scene and returned a negative result, police said.
She was arrested and taken to Armidale hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.
The road was cordoned off and a crime scene setup, which was combed by Armidale detectives and forensic police.
The moments leading up to the accident are under investigation by police, and inquiries continue, a spokesperson confirmed.
A report will now be prepared for the coroner.
