These big questions were on the slate for almost 70 students from four Armidale schools - independent, government, and Catholic - who competed at the inaugural New England Philosothon at The Armidale School on Wednesday.
Teams made up of students from each school explored deep ideas using a collaborative Committee of Inquiry model.
Students were evaluated for how they thought through different perspectives, and encouraged their team-mates to discuss.
Unlike debating, there was no set direction of thought, all viewpoints were respected, and exploration was as important as any conclusions.
"It teaches a range of skills, particularly listening to what someone else is actually saying, without inciting the need to respond with a particular point of view," organiser Sue Paff said. She has run the event in Coffs Harbour for several years.
Ms Paff hopes next year students from more regional schools can be exposed to the wonder of philosophy.
