Two days ago, Guyra households were given the opportunity to swap their old shower head for a $160 replacement for free under council's new exchange program aimed at helping households save water and money.

Sally Thorsteinsson is council's sustainability officer and said there was a very positive initial response to council's offer.

"We have had 12 shower heads changed over and more enquiries from residents. People have been showing an interest in this and we hope that it continues, and people continue to take up the offer," she said.

"We are really happy with the swift response. We're advising people to get in quickly. It's fabulous that people are responding and we really need this immediate response to reduce water usage.

"I have also been visiting schools and delivering the water conservation messages there too. The students are fantastic, they're very responsive and we're hoping they're taking it home to their families."

It was Councillor Libby Martin who brought the issue of the lack of clear signage at local property entrances forward on June 5.

She said there was an alarming amount of unclear or missing signage, and much of what was there was not visible from the road or in the dark.

"We have had 26 applications for signs so far, and we're waiting for more applications to come in. It was a solid response by residents," she said.

Council provided the opportunity to purchase signs for $300, including installation. Application forms are available on council's website, or at its offices in Armidale and Guyra.

Mayor Simon Murray said he was pleased with the response because accidents happened more frequently on rural properties than they should, "Emergency services not being able to find the right property could very well turn an accident scene into a tragic event," he said.
