Try to get out and enjoy what some regard as the best time in the region, with mild days, soft light and beautiful colours in the landscape.
Trees to look out for include Quercus rubra (red oak), Quercus coccinea (scarlet oak), Gingko (maidenhair tree), Nyssa sylvatica (tupelo), Fraxinus excelsior (golden ash), Liquidamber (sweetgum), Pistacia chinensis (Chinese pistachio), Sapium sebiferum (Chinese tallow tree), Parrotia persica (Persian witchhazel), Pyrus ussuriensis (Manchurian pear), Lagerstroe mia (crepe myrtle) and Acer palmatum (Japanese maple).

Now is a great time to divide perennials. Results can often be better than in early spring, when the ground is much colder and has not yet warmed up.

Even though we are noticing the cooler nights, the soil is still warm and generally, the roots of perennials are still actively growing so they have a good chance to establish well.
Continue planting cabbages, caulis, broccoli, lettuce, rocket, spinach, turnips, leeks and shallots. Keep checking the brassicas for caterpillars.
English spinach and silverbeet will continue to grow through the winter with little effort.
There's still time to plant sweet peas.
On Saturday, April 27 and Sunday, April 28, the garden of Susan and Ray Cantrell at 39 Lynland Drive, Armidale, will be open to raise funds for the Saumarez Rose Garden.
Ray is a past president of the Armidale Garden Club and he and Susan are avid, clever gardeners. A raffle, stalls, teas and lunches are available so treat yourself to a day out.

The day is meant to be funny and lighthearted, but if you intend to participate, don't forget the sunscreen and hat and it might be wise to give your neighbours some advance warning! Whatever you do, have a lovely weekend out in the garden.
Armidale Garden Club meets next on Thursday, April 23 at 7.30pm at the Uniting Church Youth Lounge for the annual general meeting and the regular monthly meeting. All members are encouraged to attend and new members and visitors are most welcome.
