It will be the first time the couple have entered the event, but not the first time they have been on a 4WD event.
This time we're trying it on our own, and the helicopter is such a vital service and nobody pays for it.
- Gordon Bell
"We were introduced to 4WD adventures by our son who is in the air force. We always had a chance go with him, this time we get a chance to venture out on our own," Gordon said.
"The reason we can do this is because of the Westpac helicopter, and it is fully supported by mechanics and medical staff.
"We'll be starting out from Broken Hill, heading up towards the Oodnadatta track into the Simpson Desert. Four days in the desert and then we head to Birdsville, Innamincka, Lightning Ridge and back to Tamworth."
Gordon was getting very excited about the trip. He said at first it was nervous excitement, but now he was getting itchy feet and really wanted to go.

Val said she was also looking forward to this trip.
"It's the first time for us both out that way. We've been out to Lightning Ridge and had a good time up around Kakadu. We went up to the 'Cape' last year," she said.
Gordon said they had always been lucky because their son was very mechanically minded and they had always travelled with him.
"This time we're trying it on our own, and the helicopter is such a vital service and nobody pays for it," he said.
"So, we get to do the adventure and hopefully raise some money for such a great community service."
