Two rounds into the new season and Tamworth have two wins - St Albert's College the latest victim, falling 33-22 on a warm autumn day at Rugby Park.
In an entertaining game, made more enjoyable by Albies' refusal to go away, Tamworth improved on their 30-19 opening-round defeat of Barbarians at home. They opened the scoring through a fifth-minute penalty goal to centre Joe Evans (he would have a lamentable day with the boot) and were never headed - scoring five tries to four.
Last year, the Magpies had to wait until round seven to post their first win in their debut season of New England rugby. Their inspirational skipper, flanker Jim Bracken, said the difference between the 2018 Magpies and this side was confidence.
"Like, the comp's a bit quicker up in New England, so we were just finding our feet there, I think," he said.
Tamworth - resplendent in a special green jersey to mark their annual fundraiser for headspace, a mental health organisation - were slow out of the blocks against Barbarians, but not so on Saturday.
Magpies winger Isaac Woodbury crossed for the first try of the match, after No.9 Dougal Elliott scooted down the blindside from a scrum about 25 metres out from Albies' tryline and off-loaded for the winger to score in the ninth minute. Evans missed the conversion - 8-0.
In the 13th minute, the home side led 13-0 when outside centre Blake Clout crossed for the first of his two tries. He finished a slick backline movement attacking Albies' tryline.
Albies hit back when outside centre Jack Bennett scored following good support play, narrowing the scoreline to 13-5.
In the 31st minute, Elliott split Albies' defence from a ruck about 20 metres out from the visitors' tyrline and raced over just to the right of the posts. Evans converted - 20-5.
That was the score at halftime, with St Albert's crossing first and quickly after the break via a scrambling effort close to Tamworth' tryline by No.7 Hagan Size.
The Magpies responded almost immediately - snuffing out what could have been a dangerous Albies raid from deep in their own half when Clout posted his second try via an intercept. Evans missed - 25-10.
In the 50th minute, Albies continued to make it interesting when fullback Ted Stuart hit the ball hard about 20m out from Tamworth's tryline and scored. Albies also struggled to add the extras all day, and it was 25-15.
The points dried up for 21 minutes, until Tamworth No.10 Cooper Thompson posted the try of the match. The long-range effort made it 30-15.
Evans then booted a late penalty goal.
Bracken said: "The game was a lot quicker [than the Barbarians match]. We were a bit rusty in the game against Baa-Baas. So I think we stuck to our structure a bit better this week."
He said "full credit" to Albies, who lost 46-3 to Robb College last round, for staying in the clash. He described them as a "young, fast side".
He singled out Thompson and Magpies fullback Isaac Roebuck for praise.
