After she was dumped over the phone last year, she started pouring her emotions into a song and at the same time her thoughts turned to her mother, Wendy, who had gone through a marriage breakdown after 22 years together.
She decided she had to be more like her mother, when faced with the end of a relationship.

It's not the first time Marsten's music has been about a personal topic, and not the first to discuss her parents' split, which happened when she was 13.
Wendy is her first single since Coming Home last September, which was written about that time, and what it was like to go through her parents' divorce as a child.
"I was really worried about it, because it was such a personal song, and you don't know how people are going to react to it. It's so close to you, but you don't know if people will feel the same way," Marsten said.
But the song, she said, is the one she has received more feedback about than any other release, with parents starting conversations with their kids after hearing the song.
Both songs were co-written with Lyn Bowtell, who Hayley first met when she was a student at the Academy of Country Music in 2016.
Later that same year, Coming Home was written at a songwriting retreat at DAG Sheep Station, then Wendy was completed by the pair late last year.
Hayley had started writing Wendy in August, three days after that relationship ended with a phone call.
She had the chorus, and the general layout written, when she turned to Bowtell.
"I was going down to write with Lyn, and I thought this is definitely a song we can finish together.
She really loved the idea, and we finished it very quickly."
A video clip for the single has also just been released, which was directed by Duncan Toombs from The Filmery.
Marsten has been working on an album to be released this year, followed by a tour, which will include playing festivals such as the Norfolk Island Country Music Festival in May, and VDMFest at Biloela in October.
Marsten said the album has been made possible through crowd funding on Pozible.
"It's a got a lot of different stories that I'm really excited to tell," she said.
Wendy is the first single from the forthcoming album.
