Matung Marcus Baget could be released within 20 months after time served for the violent attack on Christmas Eve in 2017 in Armidale.

Baget appeared in Armidale District Court for sentencing this week, where Judge Jeffery McLennan jailed him for a minimum of two years and nine months before he's eligible for parole.

Baget pleaded guilty in November in a Tamworth court to a charge of special aggravated break-and-enter with wounding after the incident on December 24, 2017, and was given a 20 per cent discount for his early plea.

The then 23-year-old admitted to breaking into the house in Kennedy Street, Armidale, knowing the male resident was inside, and then wounding the man.

Baget then armed himself with a machete during the confrontation with the 30-year-old occupant, who was seriously injured in the struggle.

The 30-year-old victim suffered severed fingers in the attack and other serious injuries.

During the struggle, Baget was also injured, suffering injuries to his head.

He then fled the scene, before police arrived. He was found a short time later and also taken to hospital.

Both men were then flown to a Newcastle hospital for treatment for their injuries.

Baget was released from hospital two days after the incident and charged at a Newcastle police station by detectives from Armidale.

Judge McLennan backdated the sentence to when Baget went into custody in February 2018.

It means that, after time served, he will be eligible for parole in November 2020.

The charge of special aggravated break-and-enter carries a maximum penalty of 25 years' imprisonment in NSW.
