Co-ordinator of the Armidale Urban Rivercare Group Bryan Johnston said the group was very dependent on attracting grant money to continue their conservation work.
“And then Armidale Regional Council also support us with a maintenance grant which enables us to employ people and chemicals and equipment to maintain what we’ve planted,” he said.
“Most of the state and federal government grants are more for just for clearing the unwanted vegetation and planting desireable species.”
Group chairman Bruce Whan said they had planted about 7.5 kilometres from the sports fields at the university to Cookes Road.
“We’ve planted something like 70,000 trees and shrubs along the creeks in Armidale, and I can’t remember how many hours we’ve spent, but many thousands of hours from the Rivercare volunteers,” Bruce said.
