The Melbourne City star has booked herself in for ankle surgery next Monday after injuring her syndesmosis in a W-League defeat of Canberra United before to Christmas.

Simon detailed her disappointment on social media, but maintained her positivity ahead of the World Cup in France.

"I am no doubt gutted to be back in rehab AGAIN, but am fortunate that I have enough time to be back 100% for France!" she wrote.

"Surgery booked Jan 14 - For an Ankle reconstruction, rehab 3 months. Now the real work starts!"

The 27-year-old has form in overcoming adversity to reach the tournament.

In 2013, she ruptured her ACL but recovered in time for the 2015 event, where her goal against Brazil in the round of 16 allowed Australia to progress to the quarter-finals.

Simon has been in and out of treatment rooms for six months.

The dynamic forward was a bit-part player in Alen Stajcic's national team in the back half of 2018 due to an achilles complaint.

That injury held the indigenous star back through the domestic campaign with City, one of the reasons the W-League's three-time reigning champions have struggled this season.

City lost three of their opening four games in their worst start to a W-League campaign, and were dealt another setback on Saturday by losing the Melbourne derby 1-0 to leaders Melbourne Victory.

Simon had scored twice in four matches for City, who sit fifth on the table with four rounds remaining.

The three-month rehabilitation timeline means Simon will miss the friendly series with New Zealand, South Korea and Argentina on home soil, and most likely an away friendly on April 4 against the world No.1 United States.
