It wasn’t the first time he sat HSC exams; last year as a Year 11 accelerant he achieved a 96 in Mathematics, a mark that won’t count towards his ATAR because of his study of Extension 1 and 2 this year.
“I’m really pleased, and really relieved,” Sambavan said. “I didn’t really know what to think at the end of the exams and I just wanted to try and replicate my trials.”
He is hoping his ATAR will, along with his UMAT exam in September and an interview earlier this week, get him into medicine at the University of New South Wales.
TAS students have featured on the All Rounders Achievers List for nine of the past 10 years.
Three classmates came close, achieving four Band 6s or equivalent: Angus Apps (English Advanced, Mathematics Advanced, Physics, English Extension 1); Nicholas Bohlsen (Chemistry, Mathematics Ext 1, Mathematics Ext 2, Physics) and Jack Berry (Business Studies, Economics, English Advanced, PDHPE).
Talented musician Kira Dooner who has been nominated for the statewide HSC Music showcase Encore at the Sydney Opera House next year and selected for the regional Bravissimo concert at Port Macquarie, scored 49/50 in Music Extension 2 and also achieved a Band 6 in Music 2.
Achieving three Band 6s were: Owen Chandler (Ancient History, Mathematics Advanced, Software Design & Development); Lucy Fenwicke (English Advanced, Legal Studies, PDHPE); Nicholas Moar (Biology, Modern History, Software Design & Development) and Georgiana O’Brien (English Advanced, English Extension 1, and Legal Studies).
Headmaster Murray Guest congratulated all students and said the solid results across the broad were a reflection of commitment and endeavour.
“More particularly, the strong results in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) subjects is most gratifying and reflects a strategic focus to engage students in areas that will be critically important for the future including career areas that may not have even been invented yet,” he said.
