Funding worth $459,182 for an overhaul of Guyra’s Mother Of Ducks Rest Area was officially announced on Monday morning.
Armidale Regional Council will make a number of upgrades to the lagoon area with significant work done to the amenity facilities for the big number of visitors the camping spot draws to the town.
Hopefully, it will translate to more people wandering around town and having a look at what we have.Simon Murray
“Even when I was on the Guyra council, we’ve always had the “grey nomads”, let’s call them, coming down here at this toilet block and camping,” Armidale Mayor Simon Murray said.
“They can stay there for a couple of days, that’s always been the, sort of, agreement. The thing is, we always see the grey nomads walking around town.
“They are people who will come and park their car here and then go walking around the town and buy their veges and fruit etc. and go to the club, which is just down the way. They are spending in the town, so they are a benefit to the community.”
Adam Marshall said it had become a very popular spot and upgrades would be done to the amenities block, including more showers, and to the parking areas.
“There will be some more barbecues put in and some shade shelters so that people who stop here and camp have plenty more room,” he said.
“This is a really beautiful part of Guyra, so the plan is to make this an even bigger feature of the community and drag more tourists off that highway, get them to stay here a night and spend their money in town.”
The funds came from the NSW Government’s Stronger Communities Fund.
