AN ARMIDALE man who was on parole when he was allegedly found with a loaded sawn-off gun faces up to 14 years in jail if convicted.

Jake Carter made no application for bail in Armidale Local Court late on Thursday following his arrest inside a Donnelly Street unit in Armidale earlier that day.
The 24-year-old is subject to a firearms prohibition order, served in August, and police allege they found a sawn-off .22 calibre rifle inside a bedroom during a search on Thursday morning.
New England Detective Inspector Ann Joy told Fairfax Media Target Action Group (TAG) officers went to the unit to execute a revocation of parole warrant.
“Police attended a unit in Donnelly Street in Armidale for the purpose of arresting the accused on an outstanding warrant for a breach of parole warrant,” she said.
The accused is the subject of a firearms and weapons prohibition order which gives police power to search a residence, vehicle and the person in relation to firearms, firearms parts, ammunition or prohibited weapons.

“Police entered the premises, and the accused was located inside a bedroom in the unit.
“The accused is the subject of a firearms and weapons prohibition order which gives police power to search a residence, vehicle and the person in relation to firearms, firearms parts, ammunition or prohibited weapons.”
Police will allege they uncovered a .22 calibre round in a resealable bag under bed linen in the bedroom.
“A further search conducted of the bedroom area, inside a cupboard, a .22 calibre rifle that was sawn-off and shortened and constitutes a prohibited weapon in a loaded condition was located,” Detective Joy said.

Police will allege Carter was also found with a small quantity of methylamphetamine, or ice, in his possession.
Carter was arrested and taken to Armidale Police Station and questioned.
A further search conducted of the bedroom area, inside a cupboard, a .22 calibre rifle that was sawn-off and shortened and constitutes a prohibited weapon in a loaded condition was located.

He was charged with six offences including possessing ammunition, acquiring ammunition while subject to a prohibition order, possessing a shortened firearm, acquiring a prohibited firearm while subject to a prohibition order, possessing an unregistered and prohibited firearm and possessing a prohibited drug.
Detective Inspector Joy said the gun seizure “is the subject of forensic examination and further investigations by police”.
Magistrate Michael Holmes formally refused bail and ordered Carter into custody to return to court later this month.
