On December 7 at the Reader’s Companion, he launches his second novel, ‘Locked On!’, a fictionalised account of blockades against coal and coal seam gas on farmland and forests near Narrabri and Lismore.
Meanwhile, a film which younger brother Liam helped produce and direct is currently showing at the Belgrave Cinema.
Called ‘The Merger’, it’s a light-hearted film with a serious message, telling the story of refugees struggling to establish new lives in a rural town.
“It’s an iconic film with some classic Australian humour and dialogue,” Marty said.
“It’s great the Belgrave has picked it up, because Australian films usually struggle against the much wealthier Hollywood productions, which have big promotional budgets.
“The Australian film industry isn’t that big or well-supported, so Liam has had to spend a lot of his working life overseas.”
‘Surreal Thing’ opens at 6 pm, Saturday, November 3 . Armidale Art Gallery is upstairs in Beardy Street mall, just down from the Post Office.
