Conditions were fine but extremely windy making holding the bow steady very difficult and leading to a long and tiring day with scores for the day down significantly for most archers.
Veterans compound division was very competitive with Dennis Carson and Dan Alter contesting this with Dennis finishing first and Dan fifth. Margaret Carson contested the veteran recurve division coming third.
Ella-rose Carson won the intermediate recurve division, Josie Hatch the compound cub division, Brodie Hatch the compound cadet division and Jamie Hatch came second in the recurve intermediate division. Teena Hooper and Mackenzie Harper were attending their first championships and handled the conditions very well. Teena competed in the masters compound division and finished in second place and Mackenzie came third in recurve cub.
Sunday was the open State championships.
Dennis and Ella-rose Carson and Brodie Hatch all backed up and Rebecca and Matthew Hatch also competed. This was Brodie’s and Ella-rose’s first open event meaning they were shooting 20 metres and 30 metres respectively further than the previous day which was very challenging for them but conditions were a vast improvement.
Brodie found the 90 metres difficult to reach but persisted and finished the distance with a very creditable 279 and the entire round with 1266.
Ella-rose was also determined to perform well and enjoy the experience. Her 70 metre score of 227 and final score of 1077 finishing fourth was also remarkable. Dennis’ score of 1345 saw him take third place and Matt had a score of 1222. Rebecca was competing in her first competition using sights and completed the round with 1107. A very successful weekend for Armidale Archers coming home with 10 medals.
