The group meets every Wednesday at the U3A headquarters and its co-coordinator Robyn Curry said it had chosen the Renal Unit because a couple of the ladies in the group had problems with their kidneys.

“We just feel that we could all end up here one day. Some of us have got diabetes and one of the side effects of diabetes is kidney failure,” Robyn said.

“We started working on these in February. Some people have made four and five quilts, others have made one and some have made two.

“We’re very pleased with it, and we’ve just been told some of them will be going out to Alice Springs.”

Director of Nursing and Midwifery Hamish Yeates said it was a wonderful thing the ladies had done.

“Patients get cold when they’re having renal dialysis and actually having some blankets to go over them is a fantastic thing, and patients will be able to take them home so they have their own blanket,” he said.

“The ladies have worked very hard and all donations are welcome to the hospital, and these sorts of things are very personal.”
